Arts Mark Award

As well as recognising schools that are making the arts come alive, the Artsmark award is a practical and valuable tool for enriching a school’s arts provision whatever the starting point. It provides schools with access to enviable networks of leading cultural organisations that will enable them to use the arts to engage and develop happy, self-expressed and confident young people and inspire teachers. ‘ (From Artsmark website)

For our students with severe and complex learning needs, communication and expression, resilience and independence are vital. Creative Arts in any form, provides a platform on which every person at any level can express themselves. Students at Marlborough really thrive when learning through creative arts.  They can participate without pressure, they can develop independent thinking and it is the perfect opportunity for all to feel included and valued.

Over the last year our school development priorities have included redesigning the curriculum and to further enhance the creative arts provision.

Our aims for the curriculum were to provide our students with an exciting and highly individualised curriculum, rich in creativity and challenge.

Our aim for Creative Arts has been to offer experiences that enrich pupil confidence, self-expression and engagement. This has included improving the quality of the delivery of creative arts, introducing accreditation, raising the profile of our school and its arts across a wider community, and to find more ways to enhance opportunities that nurture our students love for arts.

We have filled the school with opportunities and authentic experiences including:

·       Marlborough festival (a week of live visiting performances)

·       Arts week

·       Forest school

·       Clay Dayz

·       Willow sculptures

·       Tate Exchange project

·       Specialist class music lessons

·       Lunchtime clubs (including: school choir, dance and p16 music clubs)

·       Shakespeare Schools’ Festival,

·       Mousetrap theatre workshops,

·       Wow Now’ Music for everyone workshops (especially for our PMLD students)

·       Workshops and Performance with the LSO at the Royal festival Hall

·       Explore Trinity Arts Award.

We have encompassed the Arts Mark Quality Principles in our projects and the vast majority of our students have been actively involved in Creative Arts opportunities that have enabled personal progression and helped them develop belonging and ownership of real -world challenges and experiences in the projects that they have been part of.

At Marlborough School, we are currently working towards our Artsmark GOLD and are hoping to be awarded this in Spring term 2020.
